Finding Self

How to find the Self:

Take your attention into the body and become very still. Notice the energy that runs through the body and keep your attention on that energy. Whatever you sense as energy is not the Self. However, that which you do sense is a part of the Self that has become wrongly identified as being you and your body. The ego part of the mind has taken a minuscule portion of the Self and has labelled it as you or, I. By keeping your attention on this aspect of the Self, it will eventually be dissolved into the Self. The you will disappear and you will become Self-realised.

Before realisation, there will be an experience of increasingly intensifying peace. Before realisation, there will be moments of sensing the oneness of all.

Continue to practice by keeping attention on that inner sense of me.

Desire peace above all else, as peace is who you are.

Focus Attention

The only thing you need to be aware of is that sense of self that you experience when you are totally present.

At the moment of complete presence, thought is still, your sense perceptions are acute and you become fully aware of the inner self.

Listen intently to the noises in the distant. Become aware this way. Now, notice your being inside and out.

Practice keeping your attention here, now!

Aware of Peace beyond thought

Just be aware of the peace that flows in the background of thought.

Notice awareness as it exists. Do this by taking notice of your breath.

Now, become aware of your body-then, notice your entire being all at once. Become aware of all of you.

Notice that when you are aware of your entirety, you are not thinking. Good!

Now, keep your attention directed on this field of awareness.

Notice the peace that surrounds your thoughts.

Notice the peace

Now-merge with this peace.

Find the felt sense-Being

Practicing inner body awareness by keeping your attention in the body and observing sensations, emotions and thoughts, will help you get to know the processes that are taking place within you. Being alert to these processes, you will come to know the extent that they come up and affect you at mostly an unconscious level. Knowing these things about yourself is the first step to understanding some important truths about yourself.

What you may not have already noticed is that you are becoming aware of these processes, you are observing them. Because you can observe these things in yourself, you must not be these things entirely. They can only be a part of you, a part of who you really are at a deeper level. Because you are observing these things in yourself you are not these things and you do not have to react to every thought, emotion or sensation. By observing you can stand at a distance and notice these processes take place in you without reacting, blaming yourself or others for them. You simply need to be aware of them as they take place in you.

Because you can observe these processes in yourself, suggests that you are not the creator of these processes-a very big revelation indeed. Think about this-if you can observe the processes as they come up in you, then you are not the creator of those processes. Then where do they come from? They come out of consciousness, arise in your awareness, and slip away back into consciousness-just like everything else eventually does. These things are form and they come up within you and play against the background of consciousness much like a movie plays against the background of the movie screen.

Knowing these things through practice will take you to the realization that there must be something else that I am. Sense that I Am and you will come to know yourself at a much deeper level.

A spiritual practice for today and for many days to come is to move your attention within the body and continue to observe the processes taking place within you. Do this until you notice a deeper felt sense-a feeling of that background to which these processes are cast upon. When you get that sense of background awareness-move your attention to this and keep it there for as long as you can. With strong determination, keep your alert awareness fixed on this felt sense (can be felt as a sense of energy or a feeling of deep peace in the background). Do this whenever possible and as much as possible as this will take you closer to any part of the Self you will ever experience.

Peace to you today

Notice the Energy Within

The purpose of this blog is to offer ideas and suggestions that can help a person awaken spiritually.

I have read many spiritual books and have gained much knowledge about spiritual awakening. Most of these books talk about what it is like to awaken spiritually. What I wanted to find was how I could start to awaken to a deeper level of being, but most books did not offer the practical actions that were necessary to begin on this path.

This blog will help you discover and develop for yourself, a variety of practical inner processes that will contribute to deeper spiritual experiences and allow you to experience an infinite depth of peace and understanding.

To begin: Notice the energy within your body.
Next: Surrender whatever it is you are experiencing at this moment.
How to surrender? Just notice the energy and allow it to be as it is in this moment without reacting, judging or labelling the energy. Feel the Energy.

Continue this practice for today.

Tomorrow, continue this practice. When you find yourself lost in thought-return to the feeling of energy in the body. From this point on-continue to bring your attention back to the feeling of energy in your body. Always have some attention on the sensation of the energy in your body.

You will discover peace.

Practice Allowing

For today, make your spiritual practice simple. With a determined attitude, give your thoughts little importance, but be observant of your body sensations. Bring a sharp sense of awareness to the sensations in the body. No matter what the sensation is-stay alert and notice the sensations without judgement. Running your attention up and down your body, notce each sensation and allow these sensations to be as they are. Do not try to change anything, just see the sensation and allow it to be.

Allowing this moment to be offers deep peace.

Choose Peace in this Moment

Everything happens in this moment. It is always this moment. Allow everything to be as it is in this moment and experience peace.

How do you notice this moment? By moving your attention out of thinking and observing your thinking. How to notice this moment? By moving your attention away from thinking and noticing body sensations. How to notice this moment? Sit still and listen to the sounds around you. At this time, notice your breath. Then notice the sensations in your back. Move down to the sensations in your legs... In your feet. Notice the sensation of the entire body structure and hold an awareness of this.

Notice what is taking place in your body at this moment, and hold that awareness. Don't react to the sensations. When lost in thought, move your attention back to an awareness of thought or sensation. Become aware that you are aware of your body, thoughts, the sounds. Do this for as long as you can until you find a way to bring about that awareness whenever you wish.

While aware, notice the surrounding stillness and peace. Go deeply into that sense of peace. Move your attention into the stillness. Notice how your mind tends to be silent at these times. Choose peace as often as possible. Move towards the stillness and peace and stay with it for as long as possible. Get to know your awareness of peace and choose this as your spiritual place to reside in.

When your mind falls lazily back into the stream of thoughts, remember the stillness and choose to go back. Over and over, choose peace.

Allow this moment to be as it is and experience Peace.

Thinking

As you continue to notice thoughts and sensations and allow them to be as they are, also note that you are observing these phenomena. Because you are observing these processes means they are not your essential nature. You are not the thoughts, sensations or emotion, although they are certainly a part of and take form within the consciousness that you are. We mistake ourselves for these phenomena at most times and react in turn, responding to the conditions that have developed from past occurrences of these same aspects of mind.

How to come out of reaction? How to develop enough awareness to know that we are not these aspects of mind that we have come so closely to relate to being the I that we think we are?

First, we should know that it is not what we think that is the problem, but that we think. When we realize that it is thinking that is the problem then we have gained some awareness of the true problem. We think, and we believe that we are those thoughts. We have ourselves confused with the thoughts. Remember, if we can observe our thinking processes taking place then there is a deeper essential aspect of the self that we should be looking at towards a spiritual awakening.

Remember, it is not what we think, but that we think. In fact, you could say, the thought making machine has taken over, is playing the role of you and you believe it. Your attitude for today should be that you will give less importance to the continuous strings of thought produced by that mechanism called the ego. But if you don't give your thoughts importance, what then? If not thinking, what else? Silence? Maybe for a moment... Peace lives in those moments.

The Background of Peace

As you observe thoughts, sensations, emotions, notice the stillness that surrounds you in those moments. Go deeper with your attention and sense the peace that is the background of all perceptual experience.

Surrender Everything

Surrender everything. For this day, make a determined decision to surrender everything you notice in awareness. Surrender all thoughts by allowing them to be. Aware of emotions in you? Allow them to be. Give them little importance today. Surrender your emotions. Observe all that enters awareness and give it little importance.

While driving, while sitting on the bus, while walking-all are good times to become aware. All are good times to take notice of what is happening inside. And with an attitude of indifference to those things that are, at this moment, in your awareness, you will allow them to be as they are.

Practice observing and allowing and experience peace.

Allow everything to be

Be aware of what's happening in this moment and allow it to be.

Sit still. Become aware of the sounds around you. This will help you to become aware of processes going on within you.

Take your attention to your body. Bit by bit move your attention from your feet to your head. Notice the sensations in your feet, then legs, then abdomen, shoulders, face, head. Stop and give each part of your body attention. Do nothing but bring awareness to each part as you move your attention up the body. Go back the other way, taking your attention from your head to feet. Do this as many times as you like, whenever you like.

Now bring awareness to your entire body at once. If you start thinking, then go back to being aware of the sounds around you-this will bring you back to awareness of sensations.

Notice the peace that surrounds you. Notice that awareness is often experienced from behind you, as if you were looking from around the small of your back at about an inch or two behind your back.

Bring attention to the sensations, notice the intensity of sensation-pain, presure, cold, hot. Observe all these sensations and allow them to be as they are. Do this as often as possible-become that observing quality that notices all things within the framework of your body.

As you do this you will begin to notice what it means to see with awareness.

Driving

While driving to work today I noticed the reactivity of the ego to other drivers. It takes a lot of attention to continuously watch the reactionary mind as other drivers cut you off or don't allow you the courtesy of pulling in ahead of them. Something is happening in these moments, my ego is driving and controlling the way I react. Try observing your mind and not letting the thoughts or emotions turn into reactionary behaviors. Being conscious or being aware of thoughts and emotions by observing these inner processes opens the door to choice in situations.

Awareness of thoughts and emotion will allow you to let them go. When not aware, you may often react as though you are the thoughts. If you are practicing staying conscious while driving but still tend to react, that's okay. After you react in a situation, just observe the thoughts that occur after the reaction. Your mind may tell you that you should not have reacted because you are practicing to be spiritual and cutting someone off is not spiritual. See this thought, notice it and allow it to be as it is. Continue to observe these situations and reactions as they occur and you will notice a change with continued practice.

Eventually you will be able to observe and allow all ego reactions to be as they are. Driving becomes your spiritual practice and you will find peace in traffic.

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

No matter what comes into your awareness, be there to notice it, be there to allow it to be as it is. See what is there and keep your attention on it for a moment. Look inside and see what emotions are there. Allow the emotion to be without judgement, without label, just look.

Bringing your attention to thoughts, emotions, sensations in turn brings awareness to these aspects of the mind. Unlike before, where you reacted to sensations, thoughts, emotions, now you will simply observe and not react. You will see what is there and allow it to be there. Continue to observe these aspects of the mind for as long as possible without reaction.

Just observe.

Awaken

Now is the moment to allow yourself to be that which you are.
